As science and thought advanced through the past centuries,
We sought to debunk every myth,
To illuminate every dark corner of mysticism with the light of science.
Armies of dusty, disused gods fell dead like so many stone statues,
Monuments to our past gullibility.
We learned to think.

We became addicted to the thrill of the spike of heroin-knowledge,
Rubber band around our arm, we shoved the spike into our vein
So that we could shut out the frightening questions we knew we could never really answer.
We were so caught up in asking how
That we forgot to wonder why.

And when we had lit every corner and opened every window,
We lost ourselves,
We lost our meaning,
We longed for the contrast of darkness.
We struggled to remember what it was like—to wonder
